Why is it so important?
According to World Health Organization (WHO), access to safe and nutritious foods in sufficient amounts is essential for sustaining life and promoting good health. More than 200 diseases worldwide, ranging from diarrhea to cancers, are resulted from unsafe foods containing various types of harmful viruses, bacteria, fungi, parasites, chemical substances, or toxic elements.
Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations estimated around 600 million cases of foodborne illnesses per year, identifying unsafe food as a major threat to human health and economies worldwide. Ensuring food safety and quality is therefore very crucial for safeguarding the health and well-being of people, and stimulating national economies, trade and tourism, and sustainable development by promoting easy access to safe and quality foods at the domestic, regional, and international levels.
